In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Susan Carland: academic, writer, speaker, wife, and mother who specialises in Sociology and Religion. Born into a Christian family, Susan embraced Islam at the age of 19, a decision that sparked both challenges and profound personal growth. We dive into her journey of faith, identity, and intellect from her early struggles with belief to the defining moment of her syahadah.
Along the way, Dr Susan shares:
• The intersections (and tensions) between feminism and women in Islam
• Practicing intellectual humility in matters of faith
• The moment she had to break the news to her family
• A funny story during her syahadah
• Why she chose to immediately wear the tudong
• Choosing Islam out of conviction, not compulsion
• Raising children with faith — encouraging them to embrace Islam by choice
This conversation is for anyone who’s wrestled with faith, questioned identity, or sought meaning beyond tradition.

This conversation really shifted something in me and I hope it will do the same for you. In this episode I sit down with Melline Jaini aka Mel, General Manager of UNIKLEARN, a program under An-Nur Harapan, and what I walked away with was a new understanding not just of autism, but of our own deeply ingrained instinct to overprotect. We often see individuals on the spectrum or persons with disabilities as incapable of performing certain tasks not out of malice, but out of compassion. We, especially parents and guardians, think we’re helping by shielding them. But what if, in doing so, we’re holding them back from discovering what they’re truly capable of? At UNIKLEARN, Mel and her team are changing that. They’re providing the space, tools, and support for individuals to learn, grow, and work with dignity and independence. Mel also shares her personal journey coming from a commercial background, facing her own challenges and how she eventually found deep purpose in this work. This one’s an invitation to unlearn, rethink, and imagine a more inclusive world.

In this episode, I sat down with Danial Hakim who shared his journey of being diagnosed with osteosarcoma at 7 years old, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. After surviving it, he returned to the sport he loved — swimming. Through hard work and determination, Danial went on to represent Brunei as a paraswimmer, proudly bagging medals! Danial’s story will move and inspire anyone facing their own battles, reminding us all that anything is possible as long as you have the will to keep going.

This conversation has so many layers. I had the honour of sitting down with Malai Didi, CEO of SMARTER Brunei, and what unfolded was more than just a discussion about autism. It became a heartfelt reflection on legacy, grief, and resilience. Malai Didi shares the story of her late father, Malai Hj Abdullah, one of the founding members of SMARTER Brunei. She opens up about the grief of losing him, and how, in many ways, he had been preparing her all along to step into this role and carry on the work he started. We talked about what autism really looks like, the different parts of the spectrum, and how we can build a more compassionate and inclusive community. I’m so grateful for this conversation and for people like Malai Didi who continue to show up, do the work, and lead with heart.

Join me in what I believe is our most thought-provoking episode to date as we sit down with Ness Salleh, known as the "Osemommey." In this episode, we dive into her journey through religious studies in Oman to her family's transition back to Brunei and the unique challenges they faced, particularly in the context of Ugama School and the educational methods her children encountered. We explore ways our education system can be improved, addressing the dynamics of teaching and learning that vary across borders. We also talked about a viral post she shared, its unexpected hate and backlash, and the surprising turn of events when she was called in by the authorities. Furthermore, we explore our shared experiences in rediscovering Islam as Muslims. This deeply personal segment of the conversation opens up a space for reflection and introspection, shedding light on the diverse paths individuals take in their spiritual journeys... The name Swanz is synonymous with the viral Bruneian hit MAJAL that took social media by storm. The song went super viral on TikTok and is being played not just within the country but is also making waves in Malaysia and beyond. But Swanz have been in the local music scene for about 6 years now. In this episode I had the pleasure of sitting down with the man himself and get to know his humble beginnings where it all started: a $50 guitar and keyboard his father bought him from Hua Ho. Swanz reflected key milestones in his life that led him to this moment, his process of replicating beats to understand hits, and the importance of the first line of a song. Fauzan and Sarah are Intertwined Studio, a husband-wife duo who creates content sharing their experiences as a muslim couple. A listener introduced me to their channel and I was immediately hooked and knew right there and then I had to have them come on IZZY DOES IT. This is a packed 2-hour episode where we dive into the beginnings of their relationship where they graciously shared with me their journey to tying the knot and falling in love AFTER they became halal for each other. They provided me a safe space to ask questions about their dynamics that piqued my interest, Fauzan opened up his initial concerns about choosing Sarah, and Sarah talked about her experiences being compared to Fauzan.
